I have less than 30min of being 40 years old. It’s official folks! But this is where it is awesome. My birthday party was hosted by my wife, my kids, and some of our youth group members.

This is why I love outreach. We invest in these kids every week, and its moments like this when you can see the seeds have taken roots!

Seriously take a few moments to change the legacy in a teenager’s life. You do this by investing time. Being there. Listening. Offer friendship and then advice. It doesn’t happen over night. It doesn’t take a specialist, but it does take an investment in mentorship and prayer (plus Advil at times!).

My goal is to have Christmas, White elephant gift exchanges, and birthday parties for the next 40years with future youth group members! I can’t imagine doing anything else.

I’m writing this standing in line at HEB. I saw this weeks edition of Time magazine and it caught my eye. The title says, “100 People that changed the World”. It sent my mind racing.

What if…

What if my name could be on that list someday. Then the thoughts came into mind, what are you doing to change the world? Ok so maybe it won’t, but I’m certainly striving to and that’s the point.

I can give you examples of people just in the past year that have changed my world. They did it by investing in me and they believed in me. Today they still speak into my life. I’m sure I have made them shake their heads more than once, but they motivate me to be a better dad, husband, youth pastor, and cooperate manager. They are part of my 100!

My hope. My longing. My passion is that I can be someone that does that for you. It keeps me up at night at times. I write this blog then maybe they will see Jesus. If the teenager sees me being real then they will trust me. If my team members at work can see I care about about their morale than a metric, then maybe they will pay that forward to a customer. How can I influence? My ideas go on and on like that! That’s what keep me pressing forward. I want to be an influencer, that will to point you to Christ.

Maybe we will not get on the cover of Time…but can you imagine if everyone took the time to truly invest in people to change potential legacies of people moving forward. Be the change for people today. Let’s turn our worlds upside down!

Here are staggering facts from 2017:

A child was born into poverty every 41 seconds.

Over 12.8 million children in America were living in poverty.

5.9 million children lived in extreme poverty (meaning annual household income for four was at or under $12,547).

Texas had 20.9% of its’ children living in poverty.

Those are some stats that cannot be ignored. Isaiah 58:7 says, “What I’m interested in seeing you do is: sharing your food with the hungry, inviting the homeless poor into your homes, putting clothes on the shivering ill-clad, being available to your own families.“

My wife and I make a priority to help low income students and we are raising our kids to do the same. These numbers keep me awake at night when I think about kids and teenagers.

I am not telling you to change your lifestyle or sell all of your possessions, but I am asking you to pray about it. Have a family meeting with your significant other and your kids. Discuss what your family can do this Christmas to help a child. It might mean one less stop at Starbucks or one less video game under the tree, but imagine the impact you could make. Speak life to your neighbors. Dare to dream and live the vision that you were called to live.

Bullying is real. What do you tell your 5yr old son when he tells you that he had a bad day because they called him piggy.

They were playing football at the school and he made a bad pass, which caused the bullying.

I wiped tears off his face and told him they were crazy. I reminded him that there is only one Levi Bridges in the world. I reminded him that God created him so unique and special. I got him to flex and I talked about his muscles from all the milk he “hydrates” with for muscles. I pointed to his brain and asked what 1+1= equals…he giggled and said 2. I was like SEE, Einstein who?! I reminded him he’s got moves like Jagger and swag like Tobymac. He smiled again.

But then I got serious and looked him in the eyes and told him: it doesn’t matter what anybody else says or thinks…His Daddy in Heaven and his daddy on earth are very proud and that matters more than any school yard bully trying to gain acceptance by trash talking. God I hope that truth got prime real estate in his spirit tonight.

During bed time I read the Crucifixion story and emphasized Jesus asking God to forgive the ones persecuting and mocking him. I looked at Levi and told him that’s what real men do. He smiled and said “ok I’ll try” then drifted asleep.

That broke my heart. Then four hours later I was thinking about how much I want that too. I want everyone to like me. When someone doesn’t it keeps me up at night. Literally I want to people to be happy with me. I have to remind myself that if I made Daddy proud (Daddy being God) today then that’s better than any superficial reward or recognition.

God help my unbelief. God help me to see what you see in me. Quiet the bullies in my life, at least make their voices a whisper. Help me share the truth to everyone I come in contact with, including you the reader. If you are reading this, know that He has a plan and purpose that only you are equipped to do. Don’t listen to the voices that makes the truth foggy, instead listen to what He is telling you! He has called us His own.

Let that simmer inside for a minute!
