Ribs from Saturday

I shared this with my youth group tonight on zoom and it led to a great discussion. Hopefully it’ll get you thinking the way it had us thinking!

Annie made incredible ribs this past Saturday. I mean, she makes the best ribs ever. Easily my favorite food on the planet. After we ate, I was cleaning up the trash and everything in the backyard. Today Annie reminded me that I never took out that trash bag! Something got into it and there were random corncobs and rib bones scattered across the back porch. Immediately my mind went back to Saturday when I saw the rib bones! They were amazing…but today they were covered with flies. As I cleaned the bones up, it made me think about how we go to our past experiences for today and often come up short to meet today’s needs. If I tried to recreate the rib experience from Saturday, it would have made me sick today and I’m sure it would not have the same taste!

How often do we do this spiritually? We want to try so hard to recreate a moment we had with God last weekend, last summer, or a couple years ago instead of seeking Him today.

The author of Lamentations talks about this:

“God’s loyal love couldn’t have run out, his merciful love couldn’t have dried up. They’re created new every morning. How great your faithfulness! I’m sticking with GOD (I say it over and over). He’s all I’ve got left.”

Lamentations 3:22-24 MSG

God’s love, mercy, and faithfulness are new EVERY morning. But notice the author advices that he is sticking with God. This means he is seeking God daily. So let those moments from the past be testimonies of God’s love, mercy, and faithfulness in your life…and seek Him today for something new!
