Treat Yourself!

“I have a lot more to say about this, but it is hard to get it across to you since you’ve picked up this bad habit of not listening. By this time you ought to be teachers yourselves, yet here I find you need someone to sit down with you and go over the basics on God again, starting from square one—baby’s milk, when you should have been on solid food long ago! Milk is for beginners, inexperienced in God’s ways; solid food is for the mature, who have some practice in telling right from wrong.”

Hebrews 5:11-14 MSG

There has been a lot of malnutrition for thousands of years. You could call it a spiritual pandemic. The Bible uses the example of babies drinking milk. Milk is vital to a baby’s health, but as we grow we need more than just milk. We need meat, fruit, and vegetables…and a lot of BoJangles and Bill Millers!

How many of us have been living on a spiritual cup of milk daily? Some of us weekly? Some of us take it like a shot when we are desperate. How do we expect to grow? Physically we can’t live and thrive on a cup of milk a week. We would lose muscle mass and shrivel up. Our immune systems would be compromised. Eventually, our major organs would shut down and we would be too weak to get out of bed.

We would never do that physically, so why then do we do it spiritually? We scramble to get toilet paper, cleaning supplies, paper towels, food, and masks during this pandemic…but leave our spirits in limbo.

In the words of one of the funniest characters from the Park and Recreation tv show: TREAT YOURSELF! If you are lucky enough to have the opportunity to read the Bible, and to talk with God…do so. Why settle for the milk, when you can grab a steak! Treat yourself to His love, wisdom, and truth.

During these times it’s important to stay healthy and safe. This includes our souls as well. The best part about it…it’s free to come to the table and there are no lines!

Re-read the verse above and ask yourself about your recent growth with God. It’s never to late to change the menu!
